Fall river 1

Fall River Valley is home to several Lakes including Fall River Lake, Eastman Lake and Big Lake. These tributaries include the Fall River, Tule River, Ja-She Creek, Lava Creek, Bear Creek, Shelly Creek and Pit River. Together they span much of the Valley forming one of the largest systems of fresh water springs in the country. These waters culminate in a splendid waterfall south of the Town of Fall River Mills and again at a viewing point off State Highway 299 West of Fall River Mills. The Valley is home to the Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, located north of the Fall River-McArthur Town Center. This state park is unique in that it is accessible only by water. Fall River is unique in that the waters that flows in this amazing spring creek originate from the peaks of the largest profile in North America, Mount Shasta. (14,162 feet or 11,000 vertical feet) Flowing from some 50 miles away, it’s icy lava tubed aquifers carries these waters to replenish the Fall River Valley and all of it’s inhabitants that rely its miracle everyday.

April, May & June can be amazing with plenty of may fly hatches occurring daily. These may flies are called Pale Morning Duns or PMD’s. When they hatch they mate in the air, then they die and become what we call spinners because of their wings spinning in the breeze on the surface of Fall River. The spinner fall hatch is popular to fish among anglers in the spring and it’s not uncommon to see multiple trout rising to these flies when the hatch occurs depending on the day, temps and cycle. Your guide can go over the best times and options as this is one river you need to devise a plan for fly fishing, depending on when you are going to fish it. We can help answer any questions and be sure you are fishing in the right area at right times and help you with lodging suggestions, restaurants in the area and make your experience in the Fall River Valley a successful one.

Mid June Through July the famous Hex Hatch occurs, the largest of all may flies, a mid summer staple for the local trout and their huge appetite for may flies that are the porter house steaks of insects right before dark. We fish this hatch on our private ranch access in the areas where the largest hatches occur annually. You can not believe when these huge Fall River Trout get going on Hexes and the sounds of trout as large as 10 lbs come crashing down in the twilight zone of the imagination, some that have fly fished for decades claims, their reconciles are none the better.

August, September, October & November

Mid summer fishing begins to depend on average temps, early and late are times to consider as the Trico & Baetis hatches come and go at various times of the day and using small tippet sizes is the key to success. In the mid day when fishing can be slow, we like to concentrate on nymphing and swinging flies with sink tips and slime lines. As fall begins after Late September, the hatches begin to happen occur more frequently and for longer periods and many Calibaetis can be seen in large numbers. Being at the right place at the right time is important.

Upper Fall River – The Upper Fall River flows out of springs that percolate from the springs that arise out of the town of Dana. These springs are very cold and encourage prolific hatches daily. The river is much smaller in the upper reaches and the very top 1/3 is tree lined. It is shallower than the lower sections of the river with more riffles and pools of water to fish, making the river easier to read and more predictable.

Lower Fall River – When the Fall River passes Tule Creek, it grows at least double in size, this area is considered the lower river. The Hex Hatch occurs in this area prolifically in May, June & July annually, it is the largest hatch of all may fly hatches. We are proud to announce our private access by a rancher friend to this section of river. We provide early and late entry to maximize your angling success. We like to meet at 7 am fish till noon then take a mid day break and come back around 5 pm. Some of our clients like to rest mid day or go fishing on Hat Creek or Pit River in between hours we fish on Fall River, while others enjoy a nice nap on a grassy bank or back at the room.
